QUITO, Ecuador - Ecuador will transform a military base now used by U.S. forces into a center for its operations on the Colombian border when American personnel leave in November, local media reported March 24.
The Manta Air Base on Ecuador's Pacific coast is currently a key logistics hub for Washington's fight again South American drug traffickers.

But Ecuador's leftist president, Rafael Correa, has indicated his country will not renew the base's 10-year lease when it expires later this year.
Ecuador's joint commander-in-chief, Fabien Varela, told local television station Ecuavisa the armed forces plan to use Manta as a platform for air force reconnaissance and unmanned aircraft operating near the Colombian frontier.
"In this case the armed forces that are deployed on the long and wide northern frontier (with Colombia) would be better synergized, coordinated, producing better operational results."
Quito and Bogota broke off diplomatic relations a year ago over a Colombian military attack on a Colombian FARC rebel camp inside Ecuador that killed 25 people. Since then, Ecuador has been beefing up its border region.

I see FARC gaining ground and Chavez back door support getting his hands on things. Look for this region to get worse when oil prices go back up Chavez isn't finished.

I see a slight connection between Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia, forming nothing that the world should be alarmed at just a beginning.

China's oil refinery being built in Venezuela down the line will change things for this region in a few years. Venezuela oil is a heavy type of crude oil that basically only US refineries at this current time can process but this will change. I think the Chinese are building a new refinery in China as well so plans for them becoming a major importer of Venezuelan oil are in the works, something that shouldn't be over looked.

I think it's possible that two to three years time South America may begin to see Chinese weapons reaching a few of the Chavez supported countries.

How do you see South America five years from now?

The deal here is that bolivia, ecuador, and venezuela all have communist presidents,...so yeah, its gonna get dirty..They want US out, so they can go on with with their corruption and control...

Its tough, to tell...I mean Brazil is a pretty independent country as it is...... not many brazilians have the "need" to come to the US,..as far as the other poor countries like all the central american countries, and argentina, peru, paraguay etc...well they are "maybe" gonna have no choice but to relay on the communist like venezuela for support....I can go on, and on bout Latin America...unfortunatly, theres no cure for cancer....sigh.

Oh, and Iran will definetly play a big support role w/chavez....so there'ya go...more terrorist at your service...

Your bought up another good point about Iran. Iran and Venezuela has ties and some sort of agreements were signed between the two countries. Iran's President has traveled to both Venezuela and Nicaragua. Not sure what agreements or promises were made with Nicaragua as far as Iran goes but the Iranian leader was there, not good. Nicaragua isn't much a military threat per say in it's current form but it's location makes it's interesting. Your take on Brazil seems right on I wonder what Brazilians think of Chavez?

The Ecuador situation hurts because that base was very useful and it's going to be difficult to replace. One could say we built their oil industry as well but there are different ways at looking at that.

Nicaragua, is yet another communist rally....Daniel Ortega Nicaragua's president holds tight bonds, with Iran's president...a couple of weeks ago Ortega stated that in fact his country was receiving support and cash from the damn terrorist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad...sigh..It's a slap in the face to the US, and how much effort we have put into this diplomacy and oil industry as well...As far as Brazilians go, they are pretty diplomatic and have almost always been the leading economic and political power in Latin America. In my opinion, they are, economically strong and have good relations with the US..On a more positive note, I havent heard of any support in favor of Chavez and his twisted ideas, from the Brazilian government..lol, man oh, man..."God is great, and people are just plain crazy"...

Nicaruaga is a threat in that it can be used to export insurgency supported by Chavez, Castro, Morales and Correa throughout Central America and perhaps Southern Mexico.

Danny Ortega would be up to it. He's done it before in the 80's.

FARC is finaced by narco-traffiking and kidnapping. Ortega has also in the past provided airfields and protection to traffikers. Looks to me as if this is a set-up to put the export of socialist insurgency and traffiking to support it back in high gear.

I second that....you know you're stuff on the "Americas"

How does Panama fit into the picture as far as narco-trafficking are they American friendly in fighting it or not?

Can't seem to find it right now but thought I read that Venezuela is financing an oil refinery construction in Nicaragua.

I wonder if the Mexican drug cartels can be link to Nicaragua? Having a friendly half way point would be mighty helpful for the smugglers.

I wonder if Colombia would hit another FARC target in Ecuador again?

At present Panama as in the goverment is friendly and combats traffiking. At least thats what they claim.

The Columbian producers and Mexican cartels have wiegh stations all over Centeral America and Southern Mexico, referred to as Plaza's. They also have Plaza's in the border region,.

If Columbia feels threatened they would.
