i have found this an interesting topic, especially when it comes to this area of densely populated countries argueing on political, historical and economic terms
it is no doubt that countries like south korea, japan, china and even vietnam are in a claiming situation about a couple islands in the eastern china sea, southern china sea and the korean strait
1) diaoyu island, historically chinese posession, however the agressive japs took it, probably buthered the people living on there because there was no news of the fishermen that lives on that island anymore. the japanese claims that island to such an extent that they are even willing to decrease the diplomatic position with china.
2) Eastern china sea claims: by international standards and logic, the sea from mainland china about 200 miles ( correct me if im wrong) is suppose to be under the rights of china.. however, japanse government wanted that area because they have a couple measly islands next the to sea, and wanted the sea to themselves. however as logic goes and international procedures goes, the sea next to the MAINLAND is in the right claim, thereby china is suppose to be allowed the possession of that sea..
3) the paracel islands is claimed by china, malaysia, and vietnam. these tiny island chains is in the middle of the south china sea, currently temporty military compounds are built on these islands, with many in vietnamese possessions in the western part of it. the mad news is that this is a base for viet fisherman, who goes into chinese seas with guns to go fishing, and blasting any chinese ship down with their guns.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Activists ripped and burned Japanese flags outside Japan's embassy in Seoul on Thursday to protest Tokyo's territorial claim to a group of tiny islands controlled by South Korea.
The protest - the second in a week - follows comments by Japanese Ambassador Toshiyuki Takano on Wednesday, when he called the islets "historically and legally part of the Japanese territory.''
The rocky volcanic islets, 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of South Korea's Ullung Island off the country's east coast, have caused diplomatic friction between the two countries for years.
They are surrounded by rich fishing grounds.
The islands are called Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan. South Korea has stationed a small detachment of police on the otherwise uninhabited islands, effectively controlling them.
"Dismantle the Japanese Embassy!'' shouted 10 men in front of the embassy in central Seoul.
They tore and burned Japanese flags and pictures of Takano, demanding that he leave South Korea.
Several shirtless protesters tried to barge into the embassy but were stopped by riot police.
No arrest was reported.
On Monday, the same group of activists set fire to a vehicle outside the embassy.
The protests came as lawmakers in Japan's Shimane prefecture (state), which claims jurisdiction over the islets, are pushing to designate Feb. 22 as a "Takeshima Day'' to celebrate the day when Japan claims it established military control over the islets in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese war.
The plan has drawn fierce criticism from Seoul.
South Korea's Foreign Ministry called it "an act of impingement'' on South Korean sovereignty over the islets and demanded that the prefecture immediately drop the idea.
South Korean activists have also pushed for their government to establish a "Dokdo Day'' on Oct. 25 _ the date South Korea officially declared its sovereignty over the islets in 1900.
South Korea says the islands have belonged to their country since 512, and were incorporated after liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. - AP
