Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy
Battle Ahead Over 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Rule

The first link was posted here about a year ago, the second link is the news stirring again. I'd like to hear some opinions on this.

My main question is if the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is thrown would gay men/women still serve & bunk with straight men/women?

The voices have been getting louder for open inclusion of gays into the military, I think its a matter of time.

My internet life has led to me having several conversations with gay men who have either served or hope to serve in the military. Seemed to be split about 50/50 between guys who really wished they could have come out but couldn't, and guys who honestly didn't want anyone in service to know.

Yes, they would, as they are asking to be treated as equals.

I would not mind the "gay loophole" being closed, being that Gay's currently can quit when the going gets tough, just by turning themselves in.

Don't really see a large influx of gays in the military if the rules change. As gays tend to be liberal, and while not necessarily anti-military at least not prone to the military lifestyle.

Let's face it, effeminate gay men are not going to seek combat roles, and "butch" lesbians, still being female, will not be eligible.

I was at a gay bar the other night, hehehhee, thats right anyway,....I bumped into one of my sushi customers there who just happends to be in the military here in Fort bliss,...well I had always seen him in a military uniform, so when I saw him all "glammed" up, I was like WTF!!!! lol...I asked him how the he handled the situation, being in the army and being "gay",...he said, he's had no problems...every one's cool with him, and just as long as he does his job, well no one cares....I thought that was pretty awsome we hugged after that lol

Chukpike's right. They want equal treatment, not segregation.

Neither do I as far as seeing a dramatic change in the amount of gays in the military... Although I do think any gay man "straight" enough to enter the military would be willing to go into combat.

To me a gay person who joins the military has more freakin' balls than an average person joining and pretending to be someone he/she wishes they could become.....

I'd point out that many major Western Armies (except the US) openly allow gays to serve. This include Australia, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany.

This situation is abit like the arguement that was made when Truman desegregated the military. The arguement being that certain people didnt want blacks in the Army because they were Black, not because they couldnt actually do the job. WWII proved that they COULD do the job.

Today same story different chapter. Most of the opposition comes from people who dont like gays period, the arguement is not whether gays can adequetly do the job.
