Moscow's main airport target of suspected suicide attack in which at least 31 people died and another 130 injured

At least 31 people were killed and 130 injured in a suspected suicide bomb blast today at Moscow's biggest airport, Domodedovo, Russian officials said.

A spokeswoman for the healthcare ministry put the number of dead at 31, and said a further 20 people injured in the bombing were in a critical condition in hospital. Sources said three men were suspected of plotting the explosion, which had the power of 7kg of TNT.

The attack is the most deadly in Russia since last March when two female suicide bombers from Russia's Mulsim-majority Dagestan region set off explosives on the subway system, killing 40 people. It was Moscow's worst attack for six years.

Russian investigators said today's explosion took place in the lounge area next to the international departure zone and close to the Asia cafe. Another source said "dozens" had been injured.

A traveller identified as Viktor told the Russkaya Sluzhba Novostei radio station that he heard the bang from outside the airport, where he was waiting for a car. "There was an explosion, a bang. Then I saw a policeman covered in fragments of flesh and all bloody. He was shouting, 'I've survived! I've survived!'"

Mark Green, a British Airways passenger who had just arrived at the airport, told the BBC he heard the explosion as he was leaving the terminal.

"Literally, it shook you," he said. "As we were putting the bags in the car a lot of alarms ... were going off and people started flowing out of the terminal, some of whom were covered in blood. One gentleman had a pair of jeans on that was ripped and his thigh from his groin to his knee was covered in blood."

The airport is used by numerous international carriers including BA and BMI, which flies four times daily between London and Moscow. Domodedovo is connected to the centre of the capital by a high-speed train and is the airport of choice for Moscow's large expatriate population.

In a Twitter message, the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, vowed to track down and punish those responsible. "Security will be strengthened at large transport hubs," he wrote. "We mourn the victims of the terrorist attack at Domodedovo airport. The organisers will be tracked down and punished."

Witnesses said there was heavy smoke over the airport and the entry from the arrivals zone had been closed. "There is the smell of smoke at that section. No announcements have been made yet through loudspeakers," passengers reported via Twitter. Others Twitters users, citing emergency staff at the scene, said up to 70 people may have been killed.

Investigators said they believed the explosion was caused a suicide bomber. "The preliminary reports suggest that the explosive device was activated at the international arrivals section by a suicide bomber," one source said. Several international planes were diverted to Sheremetyevo airport, with Domodedovo temporarily closed to incoming planes.

The attack is likely to be blamed on Islamist radicals, and is another grim sign that terrorism has returned to the Russian capital. The Kremlin has repeatedly insisted the situation in Russia's North Caucasus has stabilised after two brutal federal wars against Chechen rebels in 1994-1996 and 1999-2005. The airport bombing and last year's metro attack on the metro suggest this claim is a fairytale.

Across its mountainous southern frontier the Russian state is fighting a group of determined and well-organised insurgents who want to establish a pan-Islamic caliphate. The republics of Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan – where the insurgents operate – are gripped by civil war, with daily attacks on police and local security forces.

The Kremlin has responded to this threat to its integrity with characteristic brutality. It has launched a series of special operations. Last year its special forces killed Said Buryatsky, a senior rebel and Russian-born Islamist convert, in a village in Ingushetia.

Another insurgent leader, Egyptian-born Saif Islam, was killed in Dagestan. These killings may have prompted the two women to set off to Moscow last spring on a revenge suicide mission.

In 2008 Doku Umarov, Chechnya's most senior surviving rebel leader, promised to take his violent campaign to Russia's towns and cities. He indicated he had reconstituted the suicide brigades used to devastating effect during the second Chechen war – which saw the bombing of the Moscow metro in 2004, as well as the hijacking of a Moscow theatre and the siege of Beslan, a school in south Ossetia in which 300 people, mainly children, died. It appears that the rebels have again demonstrated a capacity to strike deep into the heart of the Russian state

Don't be stupid. North Caucasus is not occupied. It is an integral part of Russia. I am from there, most families there are like mine, think the same. This is our country. Has been for centuries. If I blame anyone, it is Saudi Arabia. They are ones causing trouble in NC, with thier Wahabi Islamism. We should bloody nuke those bastrads IMHO

weather from there or elsewhere- financing is matter for cause- with nations being turned in to Islamist's- only more of financing to be expected in future and from the place, that you'd never suspect!
BTW Chechnya is run by Sharia law? soon it will be the center of training IMHO, with no means to eradicate.

A. Not demagogy. North Caucasians spill their blood every day fighting these very terrorists. People in Moscow of course only see this war when something like this happens. Otherwise, most don't know what's going on. But, Chechen, Ingush, Ossetian, Cossack 58th Army soldiers, Specnaz fighters, policemen, OMON paramilitary troops face this very threat every day. They, my father and older brother included, know where it comes from - Saudi.

And there is always a way to eradicate that. Like this:

Well, whaddya know?:

The two suicide bombers who carried out the Moscow attack were thought to be part of a suicide squad trained in Pakistan’s al-Qaeda strongholds and sent to the capital to target the city’s transport system.

Russian security services warned in December that there were two attack teams primed to carry out attacks, sparking fears there could still be terrorists at large who were prepared to carry out another attack.
Intelligence sources said that the squads had established a base, at a house in Moscow, where the suicide belts to be used in attacks were assembled.

Russian security sources said yesterday that a male and female suicide bomber from the Black Widow brigades had carried out the bombing together. The attack had been close supervised by three accomplices, who had watched from a distance and are now being sought by the authorities.

A Russian security official said the bomb that ripped through Moscow’s Domodedovo airport was carried by a woman who mingled in the crowd at arrivals. She then either set the bomb off herself or someone else detonated it using a remote-control device.

An eyewitness said the woman had been dressed in black and had worn a veil, suggesting she may have been a ‘Black Widow’ suicide bomber from the North Caucasus region out to revenge the killing of her husband by Russian security forces.

“The explosion occurred the moment the presumed female suicide bomber opened her bag,” the security source told the RIA Novosti news agency. “The terrorist was accompanied by a man. He was standing beside her and (the blast) tore off his head.”

Intelligence services have been embarrassed by the revelation that informants had warned of an attack on an airport in the Russian capital just weeks before the incident. Security experts said the tip-off had revealed that a criminal gang based in the Moscow suburbs was assisting a Chechen bombing making squad and that a suicide cells was travelling from training camp.

A newspaper close to Russia’s FSB security service published what it claimed was a warning to Moscow police issued in December that said there was credible intelligence that a suicide squad made up of three women and one man from Chechnya was headed to Moscow.

The memo said the team had spent time in Pakistan and Iran and that one of the women had a relative with a flat in Moscow that might be used as a bomb making factory. Another group of five Islamist militants trained in Pakistan was also expected to cross into Russia soon, it added.

An al-Qaeda linked website said that the group Islamic Caucasus Emirate, led by the rebe Doku Umarov, was poised to claim it had staged the attack. It said that Russia’s harsh military measures against independence activists in the Caucasus had provoked the attack. It said: “You disbelievers are the firewood of Hell. You will enter it.”

The daily Kommersant newspaper said security service officials were alerted to the extent of the threat when a woman accidentally blew herself up on New Year’s Eve in Moscow. It later emerged that her husband was in jail for being a member of an Islamist terror group and that she and a girlfriend had been sent to Moscow from the internal Muslim republic of Dagestan to commit an act of terror.

Russian media published a grisly picture of the male terrorist’s severed head that was being circulated around police and security services in the troubled mostly Muslim North Caucasus region to see if anyone recognised him.

The region, which includes restive internal Russian republics such as Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan, is in the grip of a growing Islamist insurgency and has served as a launching pad in the past for a series of deadly strikes on civilian targets in Moscow and other cities.

We can hardly say we’re surprised to hear where the Moscow airport bombers were trained – but it does provide yet more evidence that the Grand Central Station of international Islamic terror is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan – the near-failed state that plays a double game with the West – trousering billions in ‘aid’ (most of which is hoovered up by corrupt politicians and never reaching those in need), yet actively working against us by facilitating and harbouring the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

We say it’s about time to put this double dealing terror state on performance pay. NO aid without evidence. Not a single Dollar, Pound, Euro, Yen, of our tax money until the Pakistanis verifiably put their house in order.

For the record, I am not anti-Muslim, but agree with the message in the end. Frankly, Pakistan is the biggest source of terrorism in the world at this point. Something needs to be done. That rogue country needs to be dealt with.

Pakistan has a long history of talking out of both sides of their mouth. On one hand, the government thugs want to stay in power so they ask for western help. They need to keep the crazies in their country happy so they don't cooperate so much in the war to find Bin Laden.

Pakistan has a huge army and could easily invade and settle Waziristan where the Taliban and Al- Qaeda are hiding. The problem is that Al-Qaeda has infiltrated so much of Pakistans security forces that it would make them innefective.

Yes. Well, in Russia we have a similar problem: total corruption. Terrorists can simply bribe their way past police, army, even FSB... It's scary.

I recently read a book about corruption in Russia. Its sad. The Russians i've met have a had a proud tradition of not allowing others to attack them. You fought a long and bloody war with Nazi Germany and were successful. I would hate to see Russia put at risk by crazies because of their police and army taking bribes.
