Muslim graves desecrated in French WW1 cemetery

LILLE, France | Sun Apr 6, 2008 11:49am EDT
(Reuters) - Vandals desecrated 148 graves in the Muslim section of a military cemetery in northern France, hanging a pig's head on one of the headstones, police said on Sunday.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called the attack "a hateful act" and around 100 police were sent to the Notre-Dame de Lorette cemetery near Arras to hunt for clues.

State prosecutor Jean-Pierre Valensi said the vandals struck overnight, daubing insults on the graves.

"They directly referred to Islam and there were also insults directed at the justice minister," Valensi said, referring to Rachida Dati, whose parents came from North Africa.

The desecration came almost exactly a year after youths daubed Nazi inscriptions and swastikas on Muslim tombs in the same cemetery in Ablain Saint-Nazaire.

France's political class united in denouncing the vandalism.

"This is a most unacceptable act of racism and the president shares the pain of France's Muslim community," Sarkozy's office said in a statement. Prime Minister Francois Fillon called it a "revolting act" and said those responsible would be found.

Police arrested two men over the 2007 attack and sentenced them each to a year in prison.

Notre-Dame de Lorette is one of France's biggest World War One military cemeteries and was built on the site of a battlefield where many French and German soldiers died between October 1914 and October 1915.

During World War One, France mobilized about 600,000 colonial subjects, including many Muslims from Algeria and Tunisia, of whom 78,000 were killed. Some 1.2 million French soldiers were killed in all during the war.

France is home to 5 million Muslims, Europe's largest Muslim community, making up 8 percent of France's population.

The MRAP anti-racism group said this latest desecration showed that "Islamophobia" was taking root in France.

Muslim, Christian graves desecrated in Israeli city

TEL AVIV-JAFFA, Israel (Reuters) - Dozens of gravestones were desecrated at adjacent Muslim and Christian cemeteries overlooking the sea at Jaffa and a fire-bomb was thrown at a nearby synagogue, on Saturday, Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.

At least five tombs were smashed and some 20 others sprayed with Hebrew graffiti, including "Death to Arabs" and "Price Tag," a slogan used by militant Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank and their supporters.

The "price-taggers" have vowed to avenge any move by Israel to uproot West Bank settlement outposts built without Israeli government permission, and have set fire to mosques and vandalized both Israeli and Palestinian property.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a fire-bomb thrown onto the roof of a synagogue in the Jaffa area caused no damage or casualties. He said an investigation had been launched and that patrols had been stepped up.

"We are looking into who could possibly be behind the (grave) desecration," he said.

A few dozen Israelis and Palestinians turned out in a show of protest against the attacks and a local councillor blamed settlers. Jaffa is the ancient part of Tel Aviv, with a mixed Jewish and Arab population, including Christians and Muslims.

"All these extreme settlers are doing different activities and they are not paying a price for anything," said Sami Abu-Shehadi, a member of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality council.

"Settlers have been saying that they want to bring the conflict inside (Israel) and this is exactly what they are doing now," he said.

Rosenfeld said there was no initial indication the suspects were settlers or settler supporters, and that there was also a possibility that they might be soccer hooligans.

CONDEMNATION

Israeli President Shimon Peres condemned the vandalism.

"The desecration of graves is a forbidden and criminal act that defames our honor and is contrary to the moral values of Israeli society," he said.

On Monday, a mosque in a Bedouin village in northern Israel was set on fire and graffiti sprayed on its walls in an attack authorities have blamed on hardline Jewish settlers.

The attacks have drawn broad condemnation from top Israeli leaders and Peres, and the country's chief rabbis visited the scene in a bid to calm tensions.

In 2005 a Jewish couple was charged for throwing a pig's head into a Tel Aviv mosque in an attempt to derail Israel's pullout from Gaza, which went ahead in August of that year.

In 2008 riots erupted in the coastal city of Acre in northern Israel when Jews accosted an Arab man who drove his car into a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood during Yom Kippur when all traffic halts and the country shuts down for 24 hours.

Come on which of the enlightened ones here are going to come up with the ubiquitous "But it isn't the same thing" defence?

After all we know that when Muslims do this sort of thing it's an act of extremists that are running amok in a lawless land but when any one else does it is just a random event by a criminal and we shouldn't judge an entire people by it.

They have a habit of building Mosques on sites of Moslem victories also. When they wanted to build one near the WTC site, the Libs were saying "They have a right to build anywhere they want". oookay fine, maybe...Seems like this Thread should be in the Politics section, though!
The muslims are desecrating our dead, not yours and you are bloody worried that my statements should be in the Politics GET A LIFE

Graves are being destroyed all over the world, two of which are mentioned above by you and some more by rattler in post #11.The difference with what happend in Lybia was that is was carried out by a armed militia. The ones who fought , with British and other nations, against Gadafi. Graves being destroyed by vandals is one thing but graves being destroyed by (former?) allies is a whole different story.

Hmm not sure I am following your miopic path here as I am sure the ones in France were destroyed not only by allies but in fact by their own countrymen (after all France loves telling people that all French colonies are part of France) and the ones in Israel were destroyed by a-holes that you seem to worship so I didn't expect a different line from you there.

So how about we discuss why the British are up in arms after all they would never do anything like that...

Muslim graves desecrated in Birmingham cemetery

By Jason Bennetto and Arifa Akbar

Saturday 05 November 2005

Hundreds of police officers were drafted on to the streets of Birmingham last night after dozens of Muslim grave headstones were damaged at a city cemetery, triggering concerns about fresh race riots.
The desecration was discovered yesterday morning by relatives visiting the Muslim part of Handsworth Cemetery in Birmingham.
Leaflets were also scattered among the grave stones with insults against Muslims which were attributed to a unknown group calling themselves Black Nation. Up to 45 headstones were smashed or pushed over.
Last month violence involving Asian and black youths took place in the nearby area of Lozells, provoked by an unsubstantiated claim that a 14-year-old black girl had been gang raped. Despite intensive police inquiries, no evidence has been found to support the rape allegation, which appeared to have started on a pirate radio station.

Vigil after Muslim graves damaged

About 50 people attended a vigil held at Manchester's Southern Cemetery after Muslim graves were desecrated for the third time in two months.
The Unite Against Fascism peace vigil took take place at the cemetery on Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton at 1400 GMT.
Police are treating the latest attack, which happened between 20 and 23 November and left about 20 graves damaged, as racially motivated.
Headstones were also damaged on 29 September and again three days later.

I hope they [the vandals] will try to understand the impact they're having on ordinary people
Rev Sarah Brewerton Chorlton Central Church

Mark Krantz, from the Chorlton Unite Against Fascism group, said: "This attack is designed to hurt the living. It is meant to bring hurt, hatred, and division.
"Our response will be to build unity and solidarity."
Rev Sarah Brewerton, from Chorlton Central Church, added that she hoped the vigil would show a united front against racism.
"When you go to visit loved ones at a grave you are already in a distressed state. Even worse to then find the desecration," she said.
"We're hoping to gain some act of solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters in the community here in Manchester, but also as a statement that this is totally unacceptable behaviour. "I think it is a very sad state of affairs and I hope they [the vandals] will try to understand the impact they're having on ordinary people."

Some how it just doesn't sound like a "military discussions" where this Thread is, but politics or religion. Why not put it where it belongs? but then there does seem to be stuff in the wrong place from time to time. Do you really think this is military not politics?

How about this one :

Following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Jordan obligated itself within the framework of the 3 April 1949 Armistice Agreement to allow "free access to the holy sites and cultural institutions and use of the cemeteries on the Mount of Olives." However, during the 19 year Jordanian occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem the terms were not upheld. Non-Israeli Christian pilgrims were allowed to visit the Mount, but Jews of all countries and most non-Jewish Israeli citizens were barred from entering Jordan and therefore were unable to travel to the area.
By the end of 1949, and throughout the Jordanian occupation of the site, some Arab residents uprooted tombstones and plowed the land in the cemeteries and an estimated 38,000 tombstones were damaged in total. During this period, four roads were paved through the cemeteries, in the process destroying graves including those of famous persons. Jordan's King Hussein permitted the construction of the Intercontinental Hotel at the summit of the Mount of Olives together with a road that cut through the cemetery which destroyed hundreds of Jewish graves, some from the First Temple Period. Graves were also demolished for parking lots and a filling station and were even used in latrines at a Jordanian Army barracks.

In 1974 the Turks invaded Cyprus and in Kyrenia they desecrated the graveyards, destroyed the churches or converted them into Mosques, urinated on the holy icons within the churches and looted them as well.

here an article from Islamic Fundamentalism in the Balkans.
There are other things that Balkan Muslims favor, but which Wahhabis disapprove. One is veneration of the dead. In Saudi Arabia itself, fundamentalists have, over the past two hundred years, destroyed all the tombs of the companions of the prophet Mohammed. In Kosovo, the Saudis offered to rebuild several mosques in the area of Vushtrri/Vucitrn, which were destroyed during the 1998-99 fighting. They promised the new mosques would be "better and more Islamic." But first, they said, the Albanian Muslims would have to uproot the Ottoman graveyards nearby.

Another from The Islamic Post : MUSLIMS IN SOMALIA OPPOSE WAHHABI INSURGENTS
Tensions have been escalating after Al Shabaab destroyed a Roman Catholic church late last year, after taking over the southern port town of Kismayo. Al Jazeera reported that soon after this incident, the Wahhabi militants turned their hammers on Islamic shrines and graves of holy people. They reportedly exhumed the remains of a local saint further north. An unidentified fighter who spoke for the insurgents told Garowe Online, “We believe people were worshipping the dead…and so we destroyed the graves.”

And now one from Iran : Bahá'í holy site destroyed in Iran
Government authorities in Iran have destroyed yet another Bahá'í holy site, the Bahá'í International Community learned in April.
The gravesite of Quddús, a prominent figure in early Bahá'í history, has been razed to the ground, despite protests from Bahá'ís at the local, national, and international levels.
The destruction and desecration of this holy place were carried out with the knowledge of the national government to which appeals had been made beforehand,” said Bani Dugal , the principal representative of the Bahá'í International Community to the United Nations.

What happend in Libya is of the same order as the articles above. This is not vandalism this is orchestrated destruction of graves.

The sad part about discussions with you is that you will ignore any fact to make an argument about the "evil Muslim" when most people would realise that all these events are the same thing.

Whether it is a Muslim smashing gravestones in Libya, an Englishman smashing gravestones in Manchester, a Frenchman smashing gravestones in France or an Israeli smashing gravestones in Jerusalem it makes no difference and since it is not a common occurrence most people would look at it as vandalism by idiots for the sake of vandalism but then people like yourself crawl out of the woodwork and try and score points so if you want to play that game then remember Libyans are not the first or the last to do this so bring lots of paint as you are painting with a very large brush.

The destruction of any grave or memorial is unforgivable, this one event hits close to home, hence my outrage....

I do not ignore facts. I just showed you the difference between a mob vandalizing gravestones and "government" supported destruction.

Yeah what ever helps you pretend to be open minded, but I am not sure any one else is convinced.

But just for the record can you point to the Libyan government documents, edicts, departments or officials that requested people destroy headstones?

Also while you are at it and in the spirit of fairness can you find the same information from Israeli "hard line" government ministers/officials speaking out about the destruction of Christian/Muslim graves there?

I ask this because I fully expect you to come back with the standard "the Libyan government must support it because they have said nothing about it" comments I figure that if there is also no repudiation from those specific Israeli officials then that also must have been a government supported action.

Israelis destroying graves or muslims destroying graves, it's the same.
The Libyan government has apologised. The ones who destroyed the graves were fanatic muslim militias.

And you know this from what?

With the evidence you have the English, French and Israelis that destroyed headstones could all be described as "fanatic [insert religion here] militias".

Here is thought in all of these cases it was vandalism caused by any number of issues frustration, poverty, boredom to name a few and one thing I do know is that where you have a lot of youths with time on their hands you will get vandalism no matter what country it is in.
