PRAGUE — Czech and U.S. officials began negotiations yesterday on a treaty that would allow the U.S. to station a radar base near Prague, authorities said.
Washington made a formal request in January for permission to place a radar base in the Czech Republic as part of a defense shield that U.S. officials say is needed to protect European allies against a potential threat from Iran.
The U.S. also wants to place 10 interceptor missiles in neighboring Poland as part of the system. Russia opposes the plan.
