Dieppe Disaster

you are wrong : in a discussion about success/failure of an operation, losses are irrelevant and should not be used.

Battle Axe: British losses :1000: failure

Crusader: British losses :17700 : success

Battle of Berlin :RAF losses : more than 3000:failure

Crete :German losses ;very high:success

PH :Japanese losses :meaningless : considered as a failure

Dieppe : losses :3000 :success

Market Garden :losses :lower than Crusader, but still a failure .

German U Boat offensive in 1940 :high British losses, but still a failure

Etc,etc

The only criterion to be used is :was the goal reached, yes or no ? In the case of Dieppe ,the answer is :yes, thus it was a success .

I suppose it was a success if the aim was to get a sh!te load of men killed, wounded or captured and huge loses of equipment. AFV's couldn't get off the beaches leaving the infantry without armoured support so the goal was not reached therefore a failure.

In the hearts and minds of many Canadians, Dieppe was a disaster.

Why in God's name would you think Dieppe was a success? In spite of Mountbatten's jabber about learning great lessons for D-Day, it was a horrible slaughter of good men and nothing was learned.

The aim was to transport a brigade to the French coast :this was done,to land this brigade on the coast : this was done, and to return : this was done ,although with bigger losses than expected, but this was irrelevant .

I think you may be missing a few minor details here primarily the objectives of the raid and of which none were achieved, after all the allies weren't just dropping them on the coast to go duty free shopping with the aim that they could sight see while waiting for the next ferry back to Dover...

Operation Jubilee had objectives:
1) To take and hold a French port for 24 hours (officially two tides I think was the aim) - Failed.
2) To draw the Luftwaffe into combat over the channel and reduce German air power in the region - a successful failure (RAF losses 106 Aircraft, German losses 47 Aircraft so while the Luftwaffe may have engaged in battle it also clearly won that battle).

There is no doubt that the allies proved they had the ability to land and extract troops from the French coast but the higher than expect losses must have given pause to D-Day planning as did the lack of achievement in terms of the mission objectives.

Crete was a success, but pretty much ended the use of Paratroops by the Germans.
