RICHMOND--The Department of Defense has approved a blood-clotting product developed by Virginia Commonwealth University researchers that can be used to treat major battlefield wounds.
WoundStat's approval this month means military branches can use the product, a mixture of minerals that stops heavy bleeding when applied to wounds. According to an Army study, major blood loss is responsible for nearly half of battlefield deaths.
VCU licensed the product to TraumaCure, a Bethesda, Maryland company that will market and distribute it.
TraumaCure officials say the company has received orders from forces preparing to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan along with battalions in the field.
