BAGHDAD, Iraq - Suspected Shiite militiamen killed 46 Sunni-Arab rivals in a
weekend rampage of revenge killing in a city north of Baghdad, officials
said Sunday, raising the toll in the latest sectarian bloodletting there to
63.

The sectarian killings that began late Saturday in Balad and nearby villages
continued into the early hours of Sunday, with bullet-ridden bodies
delivered to the Balad's main hospital, according to a hospital director.

An army officer in the nearby city of Tikrit who also confirmed the killings
said 63 people had been arrested on suspicion of taking part in the
violence, among them both Sunnis and Shiites.

The killings were in apparent retaliation for the slayings of 17 Shiites,
whose decapitated bodies were found in an orchard on the town's outskirts on
Friday.
