A Dead Hero from the Corps

The Brit Pack (probationer)
Hi there, this is a poem I wrote some time ago.

War is raging far away, that we all can see,
For someone threatens our right to live as happy as can be,
But now my brother has left, off to war he went,
With other lads like himself, from this town of Kent,

The military come to me, as his next of kin,
I look out of the window, as the black sedan pulls in,
The officer and Padre both serving in his corps,
Walk solemnly with heads bowed, up to my front door,

Through the frosted glass upon the door, I see this Royal Marine,
In his hands he holds the flag, and a letter from the Queen,
He stares me down and in his eyes, I can see the pain he feels,
I know he too has lost a brother, with whom he shared his meals,

At the funeral of my brother, many eulogies are read,
Some are sad, others are happy, all commemorate the dead,
And my brother is remembered for the service that he gave,
As the flag-covered coffin is lowered slowly into the grave,

I think back to that day, as the rain began to pour,
To that Marine and Padre who came knocking at my door,
And I think of my brother in the peace he now has found,
For his spirit soars to heaven, while his body lies underground,

My brother will be remembered for many years to come,
As the man who gave his life, to preserve our freedom,
And as I remember the men, lost unto these wars,
I think of my brother, a dead hero from the corps.

Note: I do not have a brother, and this poem is entirely fictional. I only mention this because when I posted it on a forum, a person on there thought I had actually lost a brother.

Now, while I'm happy that my poetry touched him and reached him in that way, I was unhappy that something that is fictitious was so seriously, and felt as though I was doing a disservice to those who have tragically lost relatives, friends and family to war.

Thanks, hawky.

Wow! What can I say - damn!
It´s beautifully written.

With your permission I will add your poem to my collection of war poems.

As a matter of interest Hawky, why did you mention the county of Kent, does your family originally come from there?

I really think its worthy of publication.

Thanks everyone. Well, I mentioned Kent because it sort of rhymed :D And 42, you have my permission.

Shall I post more?

Invaded - Another Poem

Hi there, as per request... here's comes another one. Before you read it, I would like to add that I wrote this because I was challenged by someone to write something about conflict, but to write it from the 'other side of the fence'.

I walk toward the embassy, your stars and stripes fly high,
When you came here seven years ago, we kissed stability goodbye,
You came in with your tanks and troops, behind an aerial attack,
Your deliverance of democracy, ripped a hole in our Iraq,

Now you patrol our sandy streets and harass us everyday,
All you've done while in our homeland, is take our rights away,
You arrest so many “suspects”, playing out your little games,
Like the story, of my father and how he was found in chains,

His blood is on your hands, leaders of the West,
He never even raised his voice to you, or spoke a word of protest
We plead with you and beg you to leave us and yet you stay,
Waiting, in the shadows to pounce on us like prey,

Ever since your troops arrived, they've caused nothing but trouble,
With your tanks and troops, you've turned our homes to rubble,
I see the gate in front of me, and have no doubt,
This I must do, this to drive you out.

If I have caused any offence, I am truly sorry and did not intend to... I realise that this is quite a touchy subject. But as mentioned, I wrote it from a different perspective. Enjoy!

Although I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit uncomfortable reading this latest poem, I realize the merits of it.

Expression goes both ways and there is two sides to every coin. I may not agree with it, but, I can appreciate it.

well done

Thank you mate, sorry if it made you feel uncomfortable :( By the way, to the moderators, if this poem creates... shall we say... uneasiness, I have no problem taking it down.

Cheers, hawky.

Thought-provoking.
Sometimes it´s a good idea to see things from the opposite side.

I liked it.

I love both of them. We have to remember not everyone is our enemy. Very nice.

"Not everyone is our enemy"... how very true. Sometimes, I see things which anger me, like people thinking that this "War on Terror" is in fact a war on everyone and anyone who just so happens to follow a particular religion. And not war on a group of extremists.

See this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18032968

That is something which disgusts me.

Thanks, hawky.
