"Developed under the DD(X) destroyer program, DDG-1000 Zumwalt is the lead ship in a class of next-generation, multi-mission surface combatants tailored for land attack and littoral dominance, with capabilities designed to defeat current and projected threats as well as improve battle force defense."

I never even gave this a thought before a meeting I attended last week, but what is the term "littoral"? Did anyone know without looking it up as I did? And why would anyone want a ship with that capability?

I would say for Defense. Would also be good for protecting vital shores off home.

Littorial means close inshore coastal waters. Since the USSR fell apart, the us navy has no real blue water enemies so the navy will be used for force projection on land.
