1941: Heeresgruppe Süd advances from the Gomel area toward Kiev in the Ukraine. Units of 1.Panzergruppe establish a bridgehead across the Dnepr at Dnepropetrovsk. According to some sources Japanese succeed in landing troops on Guadalcanal in the night from destroyers. Nauru, Gilbert Is. and Goodenough, off the SE coast of New Guinea are occupied by Japanese. Battle of Milne Bay, Papua, begins. Japanese Special Naval Landing Force of 1,200 men come ashore.British and Soviet troops enter Iran to forestall any German incursions in the wake of the failed coup by anti-British elements in Irak that Lord Mountbatten becomes the supreme allied commander in South East Asia Command.was supported by German special forces flown in from Greece.
1944: US and Free French troops enter Paris without a fight, followed by General de Gaulle who takes the salute. Rumania declares war on Germany. Finland begins secret negotiations with the Soviet Union about a cease-fire.

1941: Panzer Group 2, along with the 2nd Army, attack southeast from their positions around Gomel and Bryansk, in an attempt to link up with units of Army Group South and encircle Kiev. Panzer Group 1 begins a breakout towards the north from its bridgeheads across the Dnieper, with the aim of linking up with units of Army Group Centre east of Kiev. The German 6th Army engages the bulk of the Soviet forces gathered around Kiev to stop them from retreating.
1942: According to some sources Japanese succeed in landing troops on Guadalcanal in the night from destroyers. Nauru, Gilbert Is. and Goodenough, off the SE coast of New Guinea are occupied by Japanese. Battle of Milne Bay, Papua, begins. Japanese Special Naval Landing Force of 1,200 men come ashore. Battle of Eastern Solomon's continues with a Japanese destroyer being sunk off Santa Isabel. The 4th Panzer Army breaks off attacks south of Stalingrad. Communist Party Committee of Stalingrad proclaims a state of siege.
1943: US forces complete the capture of New Geor gia in the Pacific. Japanese fall back to Francisco River where it runs into Bayern Bay on New Guinea while being pursued by Australian and American troops. Lord Mountbatten becomes the supreme allied commander in South East Asia Command. 140 Allied fighters and 136 bombers strafe and bomb the airfield at Foggia, as part of the preparations for the invasion of the Italian mainland. Many axis aircraft are destroyed in these raids. The Russians continue their advance to the West of Kharkov.
1944: Russian 3rd Baltic Front reaches Tartu in Estonia. Romania declares war on Germany. French armour reaches Paris as the 5,000-strong German garrison surrenders.

1941: Spitsbergen Norway - Small British-Canadian force destroys radio and weather stations and coal supplies on Spitsbergen Island; to destroy anything of use to the Germans.
1944: Canadian Corps starts attack on the Gothic Line with the objective of capturing Rimini; cross the Metauro River, the first of six rivers lying across the path of the advance; move on to the Foglia River where the Germans have concentrated their forces.

1942 - Five Navy nurses who became POWs on Guam repatriated .
1951 - 23 fighters from USS Essex (CV-9) escort Air Force heavy bombers attacking Najin, Korea since target was beyond range of land-based fighters.
