July 22 US Naval History
1802 - Frigate Constellation defeats 9 Corsair gunboats off Tripoli.
1905 - Body of John Paul Jones moved to Annapolis, MD for reburial.
1953 - U.S. ships laid down heavy barrage to support UN troops in Korea
1964 - Four Navy Divers (LCDR Robert Thompson, MC; Gunners Mate First Class Lester Anderson, Chief Quartermaster Robert A. Barth, and Chief Hospital Corpsman Sanders Manning) submerge in Sealab I for 10 days at a depth of 192 feet, 39 miles off Hamilton, Bermuda. They surfaced on 31 July 1964.
1974 - Evacuees from the coup on Cyprus arrive on board Navy vessels in the Mediterranean. Operation ended on 24 July

1864 Petersburg Siege: Battle of The Crater. Union troops who had been miners had dug a tunnell & placed a mine under Confederate lines. US Colored Troops had been trained to attack on either side of the crater & then advance down the trench lines, opening up a useable gap that the rest of the troops could attack in depth through. At the last moment Gen. Meade suffers an attack of Political Correctness &, with concurrence of Gen. Grant, orders Gen. Burnside not to use the US Colored Troops to lead the attack. Instead Burnside has to use troops untrained for the mission & they charge into The Crater & are slaughtered. Meade & Grant blame Burnside & relieve him.

1945 Japanese sub I-58 sinks USS Indianapolis, over 800 sailors die adrift in the ocean after the Cruiser sinks.
