Danish soldier wounded in Iraq shooting

COPENHAGEN, Denmark_A Danish soldier was shot in the back Wednesday during
an assignment in southern Iraq, the military said.

He was taken to a hospital at the Danish camp near Basra, Defense Command
Denmark said in a statement.

The soldier was conscious upon arrival at the hospital and was immediately
taken to the operating room, the statement said. There were no other details
about his condition.

Military spokesman Hans Vedholm said only one shot was fired in the incident
in Qurnah, about 60 kilometers (35 miles) north of Basra.

Three Danish soldiers have been killed in Iraq, two by roadside bombs and
one by friendly fire.

Denmark has about 530 troops stationed in southern Iraq under British
command.
