COPENHAGEN, Oct 6, 2006 (AFP) - A Danish soldier was killed after a mortar
attack in Al-Hartha near the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the Danish news
agency Ritzau reported on Friday.

While on a mission on Thursday, aimed at stopping rocket attacks on British
and Danish bases in southern Iraq, a Danish soldier was seriously injured
after coming under grenade and mortar fire.

The soldier was taken by helicopter to the army hospital at the
headquarters shared by troops of both countries, where he later died of his
injuries.

A staunch ally of the United States, Denmark has around 470 soldiers
stationed in Basra under British command.

Thursday's fatality brings to six the number of Danish soldiers killed
since the Danish contingent was sent to Iraq in August 2003.
