BRAZIL driver Cristiano da Matta, injured when his car hit a deer during a Champ-car practice session last week, remains in stable condition in intensive care today (AEST).

He is unconscious with swelling around the brain, his RuSport team said, following emergency surgery to treat a subdural hematoma.
Da Matta's parents, two brothers and girlfriend arrived at the hospital at the weekend and have remained by the driver's side, releasing a statement today saying they are confident all is being done to help him.
"We have been fully briefed about Cristianos condition and the hospital staff has been providing us with frequent updates," da Matta's family said.
"We're very happy with the care that Cristiano is receiving. We are confident that he is getting the best care possible. We will continue to stay here with Cristiano for the foreseeable future, based on his recovery."
Relatives thanked well-wishers for their messages, adding "we know it will help him get through his recovery process".
