THE WORLD WAR II U.S. infantry company with which I served in Germany included a sergeant named Heinzmann who spoke with a heavy German accent. At night it was impossible to tell friend from foe except by password and countersign, so a special code was devised for Sergeant Heinzmann. When one of us heard the correct countersign given in a German accent, we would offer the further challenge "Heinz," to which Heinzmann would prove his identity with the reply "Pickles!"
