Congress is sending Fort Belvoir an extra $219 million to hasten the massive renovation of DeWitt Community Hospital, including some money for related road projects.
The funding is expected to speed construction on the 147-bed facility that, with Bethesda National Naval Medical Center, is set to replace the embattled Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
The money, included in the $696 billion defense appropriation bill, includes $13 million to build the extension replacement for Woodlawn Road, U.S. Rep. Jim Moran’s office said Thursday.
Also Thursday, the Pentagon cut down the list of proposals competing for 6,200 military jobs to be moved under the Base Realignment and Closure Commission process, U.S. Army spokesman Dave Foster said.
Foster would not say how many of the seven proposals, which include projects in Alexandria, Manassas Park and southeastern Prince William County, were eliminated because they did not meet the minimum requirements for further consideration, citing the integrity of the process.
The developers selected for further consideration will compete with the federally owned Government Services Administration warehouse location in Springfield for the project. A decision is expected in June.
Representatives of Alexandria’s Victory Center, Manassas Park’s Blooms Grove Station and Prince William County’s Harbor Station projects said Thursday afternoon they were awaiting word from the Army.
Developers of projects that are not selected can be briefed about why their proposal was not chosen.
