DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO – The body, mind and soul of troops and their families form the new battlefield in the fight against combat stress, numerous speakers told about 800 mental-health experts and high-ranking officers yesterday during a national conference in downtown San Diego.
They said weapons to counter post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol abuse and other combat-related ills include traditional counseling and medications along with more novel therapies such as martial arts, yoga, meditation and biofeedback.
The warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan “is not going to end anytime soon and we need to take care of our Marines,” said Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland, commander of the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
Helland spoke at the second annual Marine Corps Combat Operational Stress Control Conference, which will run through tomorrow at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.
The Marine Corps reported 2,114 cases of PTSD last year, compared with 577 in 2004, according to the office of the surgeon general. The Army recorded 10,049 cases of PTSD last year and 3,845 in 2004.
