I have always had an interest in the American civil war probably because it was the last war fought using Napoleonic tactics but with early modern equipment which may explain the heavy casualty rate, it was followed by the Franco-Prussian war which was closer to a modern war and also very interesting.

Early War was Napoleonic, The Siege of Petersburg was very WWI, trench warfare, but with muzzle loaders, dug "mines' under enemy trenches, ect. The Confederates had armored trains.

Yes and that is what makes it interesting, if you look at the Franco-Prussian war five years later it was a clear change in tactics.
