Nikolai Yezhov , the young man strolling with Stalin to his left, was shot in 1940. He was edited out from a photo by Soviet censors.
 
It looks like two different pictures to me. Look at the lighting, and look at the top right. The 2nd pic shows a some sort of building that the first one does not. Also look at the wrinkles on Stalins coat.....different.
 
Soviet censors were known for editing out blemishes and such or editing out people altogether. Some of the more notable censor jobs were Stalin's pockmarked face and Gorbachev's extensive birthmark.
