June 26, 2008 WICHITA FALLS, Texas – An Air Force colonel was acquitted of rape yesterday, but convicted of indecent assault involving two other women at Sheppard Air Force Base.
Col. Samuel Lofton III was the 82nd Training Group commander at the Wichita Falls base from 2004 until about a year ago. He was removed while being investigated for misusing his government travel card and pleaded guilty last week to larceny.
He had been accused of assaulting and raping a civilian worker, assaulting a second one and making sexually suggestive comments toward a third woman on the base. The jury also convicted Lofton of two counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman.
