I have a friend who sent a news story (without a link) to me about Venezuela might some day to rally his country together by attacking Colombia. I would think the US would help Colombia. Could Venezuela pull something like this off?

This is the story he sent but without a link
Hugo Chávez would look to face for a conflict with Colombia Julio 16 of 2007

Hugo Chávez would look to face for a conflict with Colombia to improve internal situation in Venezuela

The former chancellor of the Foreign affairs of Venezuela Fernando Ochoa pointed out that that it is the only explanation for "the great acquisition of material of war that is making the government of Chávez."

According to the retired general, "a conflict with Colombia is much more believable" that the thesis that USA. it looks for to invade the country and it would allow to the Venezuelan leader to revert the fall of its image.

According to Ochoa, the acquired material "he doesn't have anything to do with the thesis of the asymmetric war that is supposed it is a war with United States, but rather it is a material that he is acquiring with the only objective of a regular war
with a neighboring country."

"With it, Chávez would be trying to unify again to the country behind its figure", Ochoa reiterated.

The former chancellor pointed out that in agreement with that objective, recently the former vice-president José Vicente Rangel "it accused sorprisly to the minister of Defense of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, of being planning a possible attack against the president Chávez."

"That made me understand that Chávez is looking for a necessary enemy to try to solve the internal problem presented with the closing of Radio Caracas Television and for the emergence of an important group of students that there are
impacted to the public opinion and that he has made fall the president's popularity gravely", Ochoa concluded.

Lets see......Since Lt col Chavez became El Presidente he's more or less been supporting FARC in Columbia and allowing them sanctuary in his Country. So you could say Hugito is involved in a cold war with Columbia already. Would he invade? Maybe.Would he win? who knows.

Hugo Chavez supports FARC, which is a communist terrorist group operating in Columbia for the last thirty years. He provides them with arms, training, money, and lastly a base of operations. FARC is also an ally of the Drug Cartel. Yeah, a bunch of communist support capitalists. Strange isn't it.... Hugo Chavez wants one thing. He wants a socialist empire. Once just like Fidel Castro's expect larger. The one item that Chavez has that Castro doesn't is oil. He can fund his little despotic empire while Castro needed foreign support from the Soviet Union and now Liberal Europe/Canada and Communist China.

Is Venezuela building up for a general war in South America? More then likely the answer is a yes. Is his target Columbia? Could be, because Bolivia and the rest of the South American Nations are already socialist allies of Hugo Chavez.

Venezuela

Hi 03USMC- So FARC have bases in western Venezuela and gets direct support from Chavez. I thought they were rumors but you guys seem very sure of yourselves. 1. Do you think the US would come to Colombia's aide if Chavez did attack? 2. Would you rate Colombian ground forces Marine/Army better then Venezuela's army in Brigade level and below? I remember reading a ways back US Marines training Colombians in small arms and river boat warfare and was wondering how they did if you knew. I looked around a little and didn't find anything bad about them (Colombian forces) but not good either. Like air force wise I read many positive about the Chilean air force and there armed forces in general, I'm not seeing that with the Colombians?

Hi 5.56X45mm- Thirty years seems to long for any battle/war so they FARC must be or have Colombian government support on some levels and most likely local support in certain areas to operate so long as well. Colombia seems very corrupted and must be very difficult to operate in. Is it as simple as for Colombia's army to deploy an extra forces along the border to make traveling back and forth harder or is much more complex then that? Colombia gets a lot of aide from our third behind Israel and Egypt that's a lot of money and arms. Where is all going is my question? Hope not the bad guys.

Thanks guys

Columbia has been having a thirty year civil war with FARC. Yes, there are some sections of the country where the people support FARC. But South America is not like the USA. Many places are still a bunch of folks living in the woods hunting for food and wear clothing made out of plant fibers.

Will the USA support Columbia? I can't say yes or no. We already send support to Columbia. 7th Group operates in Columbia along with DEA and other law enforcement agencies. Does Columbia have better armed forces then Venezuela. I'd say no. I'd say that they're about the same... Problem is that Venezuela has allies. Bolivia and and Nicaragua are both 100% socialist countries. Also there are other countries that follow the socialist ideal but they have yet to give Hugo Chavez open support.

FARC moves across the border whether Hugo will come up and say it is a different story. He pretty much tipped his hand when he accused Columbia of kidnapping a FARC commandante from Caracas last year.
Columbias ground forces and their national police are highly trained for Guerilla WF. The Air Force are also COIN oritented .

South America is not like the USA

Hi 5.56X45mm
Many places are still a bunch of folks living in the woods hunting for food and wear clothing made out of plant fibers.
I have to admit this comment through me off a little I forget a lot of South Americans live off the land. My Colombian friend who sent me the new story was pretty sure the US would help. I would have assume the Colombian army to be better then Venezuela's because of there current battles with FARC. I will take your word for it since I'm a arm chair guy and don't do for real. I Google Nicaragua and was very troubled to see Iran's President and Chavez both in Nicaragua! Your 100% socialist comment about Venezuela, Bolivia, and Nicaragua is so very true. What stops Chavez from buying Chinese weapons in bulk and arming these countries? Its just a feeling and I know Chavez just bough huge amounts of weapons from Russia but I have this feeling China and Venezuela are going to buddy up soon. I do not want Iran's President or Iran's oil money support in Central America period. Could Chavez link three or four countries/governments together and make a power play in South America? There seems to be a lot of left wing countries in South America now. I wonder how Brazil's government views Chavez? It seems when ever I look something up I find another eight things that get my attention, thanks

Hugo Chavez and his goons have been buying arms like they're going out of style. As for the living off the land coment that I made. It's true. You have a middle class but it is small. Most folks living in the majority of Latin America are peasants. That is sadly the main reason why communism and socialism can survive there. When you live in a place with no running water and someone comes and tells you that they will give you everything you want just for supporting them. You will more then likely jump at the offer. That is what is happening in Latin America one again.

I don't know if US would support Columbia since US buy Venezuela's oil? Correct me if I'm mistake about US buy their oil.

I hope US would stay neutral if Venezuela having conflict with Columbia.

Oil

Hi Fox
The United States buys so much oil that what they buy from Venezuela is really under 10% of the USA daily imports, so it's not a oil thing per say. In fact Venezuelan oil is what they call heavy crude and only certain countries have the refineries to refine it, the US does. It's a much larger part of Venezuela's economy dealing with the US then it is for the United States buying there oil by a large margin. We could make up the difference from other sources if we had to. US oil companies make money off Venezuela's heavy crude oil so it's a give and take thing.

I'd back Columbian forces in this fight... Venezuela would have their arse handed to them and the US would be rid of another wart on the sack of democracy, freedom and apple pie. Columbian troops have combat experience what with FARC and other narco-terrorists over the past 20-30 years. Battle hardened troops if supported well usually give green guys a hiding they remember for some time. Besides you know Uncle Sugar wouldn't sit this one out. ;)

Hell, if the SHTF with Hugo and Columbia. I might go merc and work for Columbia. Nothing says "Having Fun" while killing communists! Yeah, I've said that I'm done fighting but this is different. This is pay back.

Folks

Lets not forget that Columbia is the breadbasket of the Cocaine industry. I am not saying that the Government on the whole is involved in the Cocaine trade, but its government is rife with officials who are. it makes our Congress look like the boyscouts. I am not going to support Colombia just so the Drug Barons can continue business-as-usual practice of pushing poison into our country. I'm no fan of Chavez, but maybe Chavez would do everybody a favor by getting rid of them. Its not impossible, the Taliban did the same thing to the Opium dealers in Afghanistan.

Personally I view the Drug trade more dangerous to the USA than a 3rd rate Communist washout.

Secondly these Colombian Drug kingpins are NOT the corner dealers we have back home. These people have political, economic and legal muscle in Colubia, and they have private armies of heavily armed rent-a-goons to terrorize those who get in their way. The Assassination of Politicals, Jounalists, lawyers, Judges, police offiers, and military personel are very common.

Just imagine the reaction of the Drug Barons will be when he sees the Country filled with US Army personnel. I just don't think they are going to give up the Cocaine harvest that quietly...

I woudn't go headstrong into any conflict, I would develop a wait and see approach.

Actually the Cali and Medillain cartels are pretty much washed out and non-rule making shells. FARC has pretty much taken over production in Columbia hence the term Narco-Terrorist.With a little comp from the AUC also on the Terrorist organization list but right wing. Most of the transport and money is now being controlled in Mexico. Because the Columbian Goverment cracked down in the 90's.

As far as being the bread basket of the cocaine industry. Well Boliva is giving them a run for their money since Evo Morales was elected and pretty much made coca cultivation legal. Did I mention his previous occupation was Coca grower and that Chavez is also filtering him money?

As far as a 3rd rate communist state in Venezuela. Nope Chavez is getting Mucho dinero y armas y tech support from China. Chavez left unchecked can do alot of damage.

Oh I know all about Morales and Bolivia, but that doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye to Columbia. The fact is it still remains a top coco producer. I thought FARC only taxed drug dealers, and did things like transportation and escort, I hadn't realized that had gone into moving product themselves. Their schedual must be pretty busy running smack and fighting a guerrila war at the same time.

The things about Chavez is that sooner or later as a regional power Chavez interests are going to conflict with those of the traffikers. Their little alliance won't last.

Nor I am I saying we shouldn't help them, I just think we should look before we leap. We dont want another Iraq situation. I was in the Dominican Republic 4 months ago, we arn't too popular in that part of the world either.

FARC fights when they choose to fight. Their Guerrillas thats the way they operate. They control large areas of the coca (coco is used to produce a delicious hot beverage that my daughter loves on snowy days not illicit narcotics BTW) producing regions of Columbia. They've had these remote regions locked since the mid 60's they were partners with Pablo and Friends in the 80's & 90's they are players in the production side of the house meaning turning raw coca paste into cocaine ya know blow, powder, snow, Bolivian Marching Dust. Transport is as I've said largely handled by Mexican Cartels now. Pacifico, Juarez, Sinoloa etc etc.

Chavez will use the Narco -Terrorists (or any other group or persons that parrot the right socialist slogans) right up till his ultimate goal is fulfilled. Red Banners and Marxist Slogans from Rio Bravo to Terra Del Fuego. By then it will be to late.

Chavez spreading the love

Is Nicaragua as anti-American as Venezuela? Could Nicaragua become a threat to Central America? I came across this story and thought I'll post it.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday inaugurated a 150,000-barrel-a-day refinery the nation is building in Nicaragua as part of the leftist leader's oil-funded battle against U.S. influence in the region.

Well since President Ortega is also the former Sandinista "President" who ousted Somoza's dictatorship in the 80's and was an avowed socialist/Marxist in the mold of Che and Fidel to the extent that he assisted other "Peoples Revolutions" in Central America most notably El Salvador and Honduras. I see no reason why the leopard should have changed his spots.

In the 80's his sugar daddies were the USSR, PRC and Castro. Since Castro is broke and the USSR is history I fully expect him to sit on Papi Hugos lap and take aid from Hugo and Hugos new buddies PRC and do Hugos Socialist bidding.

I think you all guys are on the wrong track.
I belive he might start a War with Guyana, sens a large portion of the country (Farmers) are supporters i've heard of Venezuela, and beacuse they have made land claims there.
Or just as whell if he can guarente that the US don't get involved, indvade the dutch islands in the North.

Your right they've had a border/Territorial dispute going over British Guiana's border for years.
