DIWANIYAH, Iraq, Oct 8, 2006 (AFP) - US and Iraqi military forces clashed
in the southern Iraqi town of Diwaniyah with armed gangs during a search
operation Sunday.

There were no initial reports of casualties, but witnesses reported
widespread clashes throughout the city. The streets were filled with
military vehicles while helicopters patrolled overhead, they said.

The violence began after a 4:00 am (0100 GMT) raid by US and Iraqi troops
encountered a series of planted makeshift bombs which reportedly damaged at
least one US vehicle, said a local police source.

A curfew has now been imposed throughout the city.

Diwaniyah was the scene of fierce clashes between militias loyal to Shiite
cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and the Iraqi army in August that resulted in dozens
of casualties, with occasional flare ups in September as well.
