Books are good, but they have a tendency to be obsolete pretty fast, especially if the information in them is wrong. I appreciate your critical thinking. What you can do to verify empirical data is to do a cross section search and compare all the information you can find. It's not completely waterproof, but it is better than nothing.
You are mentioning Jane's and that is a very trustworthy source. Compare what Jane's is saying about Chinese armor with what other sources and check their sources, do you follow what I mean?
