Is China Better off just letting Taiwan go and do whatever??
Came up in the Taiwan/China topic, but I'm curious what everyone thinks of it:

If the elect to choose independence, that's also just fine. The bigger picture that most Chinese seem to not be seeing: China DOESN'T NEED THEM. Its a tiny scap of ground that will not significantly impact whether China one way or the other. By dropping Taiwan and putting its fate 100% into the hands of its citizens, China would achieve more diplomatically than it could through any other action.
I don't know if they CAN, but if they COULD and DID ... what would that do to China's image?? I got to thinking and I think that China would actually best off if, after telling Taiwan to do as they like, if Taiwan DID declare Independence because absolutely everyone would expect China to invade anyway. Taiwan voting for reunification would not prove anything. Would China be better off if Taiwan were a recognized Independent Country??

OH NO NO MORE taiwan, you already drive me crazy with ALL the Taiwan stuff

Well, it's okay to have this poll.

I believe:
Taking Taiwan back will boast a great image of PRC among ALL Chinese.

As for outside world:
1. some support PRC, since they admint Taiwan is part of China.
2. some may dislike it, thus for them no good image of PRC.
3. some does not care at all, they continue usual bussiness with PRC.

Don't worry godofthunder9010, in fact I like your posts very much.

Xion is right. Like before Pakistan was part of India, no big trouble.

While I can see your point, the dynamics of the Taiwan and China situation is quite different, so I don't know that we'd be seeing Taiwan launching terror attacks on Mainland China. Unlike Pakistan, they're so much weaker than Mainland China that its not even worth considering -- it would be stupid beyond belief. I think that Taiwan is 100% sure that the PRC isn't going to let them go quietly -- they'd be so shocked by something like that happening that I don't think they'd know what to do next.

A taiwanese invasion is good in most terms
1) a good experience for the PLA, PLAn and PLAAF in which the chinese could test their new bag of toys
2) moral boost for the chiense in china about their national powers and capabilities
3) the reconquwrinrg of lost territory is very pleasing to the people
4) it will change the reputation of chiense militart from mass-human based offensives to small-nmbered hightech invasions
5) no more *cring from taiwan, GOD, i wanna gun chenshibien down!!!
6) a step in taiwan is a step in retaking lost islands the japanese took

As of this moment, every nation anywhere near China thinks that China is out to get them ... hell even North Korea isn't 100% sure China's not out to get them. Its a reputation problem. If China invades Taiwan, they're just living up to their reputation and re-ruining all progress.

China doesn't think they need any allies or even interaction with the rest of the world. The feeling seems to be that how other people perceive China is irrelevant. What I'm seeing as the result is that the more powerful China becomes, Russia, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, Phillipines, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore all will be strengthening their strategic alliances to counterbalance. Just that list would be a nightmare for China and we haven't even factored into the equation what impact the United States might have. The problem with taking the Militaristic approach to every diplomantic problem is simple: China vs The World = The World Wins. The World is bigger than China, plain and simple.

CHUNKER's post may or may not be representative of the PRC as a whole, but it does jump straight into the #1 reason nobody wants to just back off and let China have its way with Taiwan --

Essentially expresses the idea that Taiwan is just the beginning -- thusly every nation in the region has cause to fear an invasion of Taiwan because who is to say your nation isn't next? So nobody really has anything to lose in allying against China the moment it starts down the path of the aggressor with Taiwan. Okay, lets stop there ... how in the hell is this making ANYTHING easier for China? Better? How on Earth is it making China stronger on the Worldwide Scene? Its suicidal or close to it.

Its pointless to mull over every single "that's supposed to be ours dammit!" scenario. Japan lost some islands to Russia that probably should rightfully belong to Japan. China lost some islands to Japan that should probably belong to China. Give it a rest already! If the only solution a nation knows is to invade, like Alexander the Great and Nazi Germany they will burn giantly and die quickly. Besides, what would you call it if when a nation goes around asserting their rights to the lands around them, determined to unite the blood of the nation into one single entity, etc? A nation that rallies to the call of avenging the wrongs committed against it? Well, one very clear example of that was Pre-World War II Nazi Germany.
