VP was between fundraising stops

CAMP PENDLETON – Vice President Dick Cheney made a brief visit to Camp Pendleton yesterday before heading to Orange County for a fundraiser.
He flew on Air Force Two from a campaign stop in Colorado and reached the base at 2:22 p.m.
Marine Maj. Gen. Michael Lehnert and Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland greeted Cheney on the tarmac. Then Helland and the vice president got into a sport utility vehicle and drove away for a 90-minute tour of Camp Pendleton's operations.
The visit was characteristically low-key for Cheney. He did not make a speech or take questions from journalists, who were escorted off the base after Cheney left the tarmac area.
“We've been trying to keep it 'on the down-low' as much as possible,” said Cpl. April Cheek, who works at the airfield.
Cheney's Camp Pendleton drop-by was bracketed by fundraising appearances for two Republican members of Congress.
He attended a noon reception in Littleton, Colo., for Rep. Marilyn Musgrave and attended a late-afternoon reception at a private home in San Clemente for Rep. Ken Calvert of Corona.
Cheney returned to Camp Pendleton last night for a flight back to Washington, D.C.
Presidential and vice-presidential trips typically combine official business with political business. That way, the federal government pays for part of the travel.
