Receding water on Sunday revealed widespread damage in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from a record flood crest. The city planned to set up 10 checkpoints to screen residents before allowing them to return home to begin removing belongings. Additional National Guard troops were being deployed to help secure the perimeter around the flood area. A forecast of an earlier and lower flood crest today at Iowa City sparked hope that the university town would escape a similar fate. Elsewhere in the Midwest, hundreds of members of the Illinois National Guard headed to communities along the swollen Mississippi River for sandbagging duty while emergency management officials eyed rain-swollen rivers across that state.
