RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Detectives are investigating whether a marine charged with the killing of a pregnant colleague might have e-mailed North Carolina authorities to ask about turning himself in while he was on the run in Mexico.
But Onslow County sheriff’s officials cautioned Saturday that they were not sure whether a March 30 e-mail message that claimed to be from the marine, Cpl. Cesar Laurean, was genuine. Among other concerns, it was sent with the wrong spelling, as Lauren.
Corporal Laurean was arrested Thursday in a small town in Mexico. He is charged in the December killing of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, who had accused him of rape.
He faces an extradition process that will take at least 60 days, and maybe longer than a year.
While in Mexico, Corporal Laurean communicated with his wife, Christina, using MySpace, which later allowed detectives to identify the Internet cafes where he was using the Web.
