Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned Colombia against allowing any U.S. military base in the coastal La Guajira region near its border with Venezuela. There has been speculation that such a base replace a U.S. drug-monitoring operation in Ecuador, which President Rafael Correa has said he will close next year. Meanwhile, Interpol said Thursday it found no evidence Colombia tampered with computers it seized from a slain leftist rebel.
The finding undercut Chavez's claims that files indicating his government was financing and arming the Colombian guerrillas were bogus.
