Where I live there are a large number of Castles, and being a military forum I thought it might be an interest to a few of the members. I will add another castle to the thread every now again. This Castle is in a small fishing port on the south coast of England called Rye and this area was prone to raids by the French when they got a bit short of cash or other things. This Castle was built in the 14th Century it was last attacked in 1449. the was updated during the 15 & 16 th Century.

i say we lay siege to them now, see how well they stand against our modern military :), i think its pointless to have a building standing for 500+ years w/o a purpose :p. jk.

Redleg, Old Castles always have some thing about them, I can't quite put my finger on it, but I always think of of the soldiers over countless generations that have done a spell of duty from these places.

Pevensey Castle....Built by the Romans in the 3rd Century, was in use during WW2. It was fitted out as strong point and many heavy machine gun slits were cut into the walls. The court yards also held Radar and anti Aircraft Batteries

I understand what you mean...
It's quite impressive to walk around in the fortress/castle I work inside now.

Very nice, Redleg. I remember our discussion about Quisling. Interesting that you work in the very place he was executed.

As for my experiences with castles, they have been many. Many of my Scottish ancestors had them and I have visited those. I think though I liked the castles in Germany the most. Just my taste and nothing critical. Redleg's Akershus reminds me of many of the German castles I've seen. My favorite of those is Neuschwanstein Castle. Here's a picture of it though you've probably seen it a million times before.

Did you know Vermont has its own castle? Wilson Castle in Proctor is quite a nice place.
