Canada confirmed its decision to block an American company’s takeover of the space and satellite division of MacDonald, Dettwiler & Associates, Canada’s leading space technology firm. The industry minister, Jim Prentice, first turned down last month a $1.3 billion takeover bid from Alliant Techsystems, a munitions and rocket component maker based near Minneapolis, for M.D.A.’s space division. It is the first time Canada has rejected a foreign takeover outright in the 19 years since the Canada Investment Act took effect in 1989.
