NAHA, Okinawa Pref. (Kyodo)--The Okinawa Defense Bureau on Saturday embarked on a full-fledged environmental assessment of the U.S. Marine Corps' Camp Schwab in Nago, which is expected to be the new home for the USMC Futemma Air Station in Ginowan.
The bureau, part of the Defense Ministry, began work on weather conditions and other matters surveyed at Camp Schwab on a preliminary basis last May. It plans to start collecting coral samples next week.
The bureau also plans to study how reclamation work and noise from the aircraft expected to be based at the site will impact the environment.
Under a final implementation plan agreed on with the United States in May 2006, the central government plans to build an airfield with two runways in a V-shaped formation partly on Camp Schwab and a new offshore area to be built with landfill by 2014. The new facility will replace Futemma Air Station, which is located in a densely populated area of Ginowan.
