The Defense Ministry began to auction off parts of some of its World War II-era tanks, including 140 Soviet T-34 tanks that later guarded the country’s border with Turkey, officials said. Dozens of Nazi German Panzer tanks and tank destroyers are to be auctioned in May. A bid of $22,000 was received for one Soviet gun turret. Bulgaria had intentionally half-buried some of the Soviet tanks on its border with Turkey as a defense against NATO attack during the cold war. Most of the country’s tanks were smelted down, with 2,500 Soviet-era models destroyed in 2006 and 2007.
