I have never had the pleasure of actually holding or shooting a BAR.

I understand it was a sweet shooting piece, and it compensated for the weight
 
Don't know what you mean by compensating for weight.

We still used them in my A Camp, carried by 100lb Cambodian CIDG.

I lugged them around in training.
Heavy, hard to clean, and lots of small parts.

Surprisingly, through history, they are highly considered, hence their long life.

20 round mag and ixed barrel are real drawbacks.

The M14E2 was an attempt to replace them-lighter, less reliable, 20 rds, fixed barrel.


The M60 vastly improved on both. Belt fed, man portable, reliable, quick barrel change and fixed mount capability as well.

The BAR was like a favorite dinosaur.
