LONDON Britain said Monday it was evacuating some civilian staff from its consulate in Basra, Iraq, after mortar and rocket attacks by insurgents.

The government said some Foreign Office and Department for International Development workers would be moved from the Basra consulate — a former palace of deposed leader Saddam Hussein — to the airport outside the city.

"It is on a temporary basis and it is in response to increased threats from mortar and rocket attacks specifically on the compound where the consul-general is based," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said, on the government's customary condition of anonymity.

Consul-general Rosalind Marsden and core staff will remain at Basra Palace, she said.
