HONOLULU - Hawaii's Colt Brennan broke the NCAA single-season record for touchdown passes Sunday, throwing three in the third quarter and two in the fourth in the Hawaii Bowl to push his total to 58.
Brennan threw a 7-yard pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen on the Warriors' second series of the second half against Arizona State to break the previous mark of 54 set by Houston's David Klingler in 1990, also against the Sun Devils.
Grice-Mullen grabbed the ball with one hand, made a move and leaped across the goal line for the touchdown that gave Hawaii a 17-10 lead.
After throwing the pass, Brennan hugged coach June Jones and waved No. 1 as teammates lifted into the junior into the air and the crowd cheered wildly.
He tied the record with his 54th TD pass on the previous series on a 38-yard pass to a wide open Jason Rivers.
Brennan and Grice-Mullen connected again on a 41-yard pass play down the middle for Brennan's 56th TD pass of the season with 2:14 left in the third quarter.
Brennan threw a 21-yard scoring pass to a crossing Davone Bess to give Hawaii a 34-24 lead with 5:16 left in the fourth quarter before tossing an 79-yard score to push the lead to 41-24 just before the 2-minute mark.
The Western Athletic Conference offensive player of the year reached the milestone in his 14th game, while Klingler's 54 TD throws came in 11 games and before 2002, when bowl stats didn't count.
But Brennan did not play the fourth quarter in seven games this season.
Brennan already owns the NCAA record for most TD passes in two seasons.
He entered the game, leading the nation in six categories including TD passes, passing yards, total offense, passing efficiency, points responsible for and completion percentage.
Brennan finished the season with 5,549 yards to become just the third quarterback in college history with 5,000 yards and 50 TDs in a season, joining Klingler and Texas Tech's B.J. Symons.
