The one major problem the enemy faced during tet '68 is they could not break contact with the Americans who stayed on them day and night there were no breathing spells to regroup , every way the enemy turned the Americans were already there , do to the fact the Americans had mobility with their Air Craft , huey's , the enemy casualties in two months were 110000 killed , dead , equals 10 infantry divisions , the ones that escaped back into Cambodia and Laos were little more than rabble .:m16shoot:

Yet due to U.S. foreign policy failures these military exploits were null, in the big Picture Vietnam did become communist, a Genocide was carried out in Cambodia and hundreds of thousands of American Veterans were shunned when they arrived home.

This wasn't a good time in U.S. history but as a young person today I hold respect and acknowledgement of all those who served at that time.

I was born in '69. I was raised with the belief that everyone that served deserves a thank you. Even 'Nam vets.

However, the problem in Vietnam was the damned politicians. Look at Afghanistan. Press and politics. Get those two out of the way and let our guys get the job done.
We can b* about the casualty count when the war is over.

In order for the RVN to survive they needed a Victory a chance to be able to stand their ground the U.S. needed to get out that place we couldn't invest that much in one place and hope to cover our other commitments it could not be done so tet should have covered it all , just didn't work out that way .

The Tet 68 uprising had nothing to do with winning or occupying anything. It was a political action that was a total success on a couple levels.
Johnson had just given his "against the wall" speech. His advisers had fed him that.
Folks at home were sick of years of the war going nowhere and the high casualty rate.
This inspired them somewhat.
Suddenly VC insurgents burst from every manhole, back room, or any other imaginable place where they had been equipping and building up.
NVA mounted operations in places like Hue City.
A-101, SF Camp at Lang Vei was overrun with PT 76 tanks and the big marine base at Khe Sanh came under siege, bottling them up.
When the smoke cleared, the VC were nearly annihilated.
This served the NVA because now it became their war. They were communist insurgents.
The VC had been nationalists bent on overthrowing the western government. The Northerners were pure Commies who wanted to reunite the country under their flag.
The onslaught by the suicidal VC served to discredit Johnson and kill any support left by the American people.
The lengthy withdrawal program was established.
We never lost. We were there at the request of the S Viet government to help them against the insurgency.
They failed to meet their own commitments and our politicians threw in the towell-right or wrong still undecided.
The very few surviving VC were not even allowed in the victory parade by the NVA.

Couldn't have said any better myself , that was the long and the short of it , having there through the entirety by the end of Feb. me and plenty of others were thinking is this ever going to end .
