'Borrowed' the town's tank...

OK I was never in the service, but here Here a personal anecdote of my college years, I left out the name of the school for privacy reasons. This incident happened 10 years before I was a student sometime during the early 1980's but the tenured faculty knew the student in question, so I think the story is mostly accurate. I heard it from my history professor who had taught there for years. Any Alumni of my college will know this story, as its now legend.

The scenario...

I went to college in the mid-west. In the college by the courthouse are 2 M5A1 Stuart tanks as National Guard memorials. The tanks are still there.

Severals years ago there was a student who had been an army brat (I believe his dad was in the Tank Corps, or something to that effect). This student had some familiarization with tanks. Anyway one night as a prank this student decided to see if the tanks still ran. To his surprise one did, (either there was gas already in it or he put a few gallons inside). So he took it out for a little spin finally parking it on the college heart (a grassy circle where the dormitories are situated around) and left it there. Needless to say the town was none too pleased that somebody had joyridden in their tank but they had a problem. In a 20 square radius there wasn't anyone qualified to drive the darn thing.

Somehow they figured out it was him, but the town agreed not to press charges if he just brought the tank back. He did, escorted by the local sheriff and just as he brought it back there was a cement mixer waiting for him. The moment he got out, the town poured concrete into the engine block.
