I also find it sad when Airfields and other stations are shut down. My station in Singapore was shut down in 1971, when I did a search couple of years ago, the whole station had gone, it is now a bird park.

I was on Davis-Monthan AFB about 12 or 15 years ago. Airplanes are placed everywhere! A number of FA-18 As has recently arrived and were placed on any available space. You could see that they wouldn't be there very long. Each aircraft was fitted with custom covers that protected any vulnerable surface.
At that time, even an A model F/A -18 had market value to be refurbished and sold or parted out.
