ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 23 -- One policeman was killed and another was injured when a suicide bomber tried to blow up a police station near a market in the Pakistani capital Monday, police officials and an eyewitness said.
"The suicide bomber came on foot around 9 p.m. near the gate of the police station, and when stopped by a guard, he blew himself up, also killing the policeman," said Rana Akbar Hayat, a senior police official.
He said the police station housed the intelligence-gathering branch of the Islamabad police.
The police cordoned off the area after the blast. Body parts of the killed policeman and the suicide bomber could be seen scattered around the gate and on a nearby road.
Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik, in a statement, said the intelligence agencies had had indications of a possible terrorist attack and the capital had been put on high alert on Monday.
"The bomber apparently wanted to target senior police officials," he said.
