Metro Transit Police charged a 34-year-old Fairfax County man yesterday with making a false bomb threat, an incident that closed the Pentagon Metro station for more than an hour and delayed thousands of passengers.
Ting Liu, a Chinese national, said another man was carrying a bomb in a briefcase, police said. The Pentagon station was closed from 2:42 to 4 p.m. while a suspicious package was investigated near the fare gates, they said.
Nothing dangerous was discovered in the package, said Chris Lehman, a spokesman for the Pentagon police, and the station was reopened.
Liu has been charged with making a false bomb threat, a felony count, and disorderly conduct. A conviction on the felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Thousands of riders on the Blue and Yellow lines were significantly delayed during the incident, Metro officials said.
