BAGHDAD — Three people were killed and 20 wounded when a car bomb exploded Saturday in Tal Afar, a northern town, Iraqi security officials said.
The explosion was set off by a suicide bomber near a sports field in the Moalemeen neighborhood of the town, which is situated west of Mosul.
A doctor at Tal Afar Hospital said many of the people brought in had been seriously injured.
The area, more than 200 miles north of Baghdad, is a frequent target for attacks by the Sunni insurgent group Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, although there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Earlier on Saturday, a bomb blast in Baghdad outside the offices of the national journalists union wounded the union’s chief and four other people, the police said.
In Basra, in the south, gunmen on a motorcycle killed a cleric loyal to the radical anti-American cleric Moktada al-Sadr in an attack near his home on Friday, the police said.
Basra was the site of numerous killings and revenge attacks by rival Shiite militias until a huge military operation by Iraqi forces stabilized the city this year.
