Boeing and Lockheed Martin plan to announce today a joint development program for a next-generation bomber for the U.S. Air Force.
The two defense contractors — sometime bitter rivals, sometime partners — have agreed to team up "to perform studies and system development efforts" for the anticipated Air Force long-range bomber program.
The current-generation aircraft in that category is the futuristic B-2 Stealth bomber, which was built by Northrop Grumman and first flew in 1989.
A new bomber would likely combine the stealth capabilities of the B-2 with the advanced electronic sensors of the Lockheed-built F-22 Raptor fighter jet that allow long-distance detection of enemy forces.
Boeing is a major subcontractor to Lockheed on the F-22 and was also the key subcontractor to Northrop on the B-2.
