We are told that it is necessary to inject a large amount of capital into the market through the Government in order to create or save millions of jobs and avoid a lasting recession or possibly even depression.
The Boarder Fence is ready to go. Surveys have been conducted, land has been purchased, and we are ready to go. So why in the economic stimulus wasn't there a dime allocated to the boarder fence? It is an infrastructure project ready to go and yet where is it? Nowhere to be found. Less than $1 Billion of the stimulus will go to Department of Homeland Security and it isn't going toward the Boarder Fence.
DOD has a whole host of things lined up, budgeted for, and ready to go right now that they could do that would get much needed items that could be turned immediately saving jobs, creating jobs, and helping save manufacturering in the United States that has suffered greatly (we now have more people working for government than in manufacturering). Raw materials like steel, aluminum, and petroleum (think plastics) are all at record lows. We have a lot of DOD equipment that is near the end of its service life or nearing the end of its service life from intense use the last eight years. So why out of the stimulus is DOD receiving less than $4 Billion of the almost $800 Billion Stimulus? Why is Obama talking about cutting Defense Spending by 10% for FY 2010 if the economy is in such a fragile condition that it is dependent on government spending to stimulate it?
Perhaps the answer to both is that the Democrats know perfectly well this so called "Stimulus Package" has nothing to do with saving jobs or creating jobs, but is a large sum of money for special interests and unions that will in turn kick back money to the Democrats and increase the size and influence of the Federal Government over the private sector in turn making them more important (ie you need to give them more campaign money).
They're talking about shutting down the whole production line for the F-22 Raptor. Lockheed Martin will loose a large number of their workforce, and in the end we'll have to spend more to get the line back up and running and more per aircraft. We're going to buy this stuff anyways. F-15's will not fly forever and the airframes of F-16's have been stressed under an operational tempo that has been very high these last eight years. Yet, the F-35 and F-22 programs are on the chop block.
What is wrong with these selfish politicians? Why not provide for the common defense, American jobs, and save the tax payer money in the long wrong to offset the national debt that we'll add?
WWII got us out of the Depression. Ask any economist worth his salt and he or she will tell you the same thing. We're at war let's put Americans to work, win the war, and boost this economy. I mean what American if given the choice wouldn't want to put food on the table and be a part of keeping America safe and strong rather than taking more unemployment handouts for a few months? Apparently only the Democrats don't want that.
