BAGHDAD - An artillery strike rocked Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone yesterday during outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair's final official visit to Iraq.
One person was wounded by the mortar or rocket attack - and one round hit the British Embassy compound. It was unclear whether Blair was inside.
At a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Blair declared: "I have no regrets about removing Saddam, no."
Blair later traveled to Basra, where a large contingent of his country's troops is stationed.
Asked by one British Marine how long he expects the U.S. to keep a military presence in the country, Blair said, "I think the Americans will be here, at least in a limited capacity, for a very significant period of time."
Meanwhile, Blair has emerged as a candidate to take over for World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, who is stepping down at the end of June.
Blair is "one of the people that is clearly being discussed" for the job, Joseph Stiglitz, a former World Bank president and Nobel Economics Prize winner, told BBC Radio.
But Stiglitz said Blair was not the ideal choice because "it would be good for the institution at this juncture if they had somebody who was an economist, who really understood what development entailed and could work closely with the staff."
