The House overwhelmingly passed a bill that would give one-time payments to Filipino veterans who fought for the United States in World War II. The veterans had been promised the same benefits and pensions as their American counterparts, but Congress rescinded that offer in 1946. By a vote of 392 to 23, the House approved a plan that would pay veterans who are now American citizens $15,000, with noncitizens receiving $9,000. The Senate passed a bill in April for monthly payments. The chambers will now try to hammer out a final bill by the end of the week, when Congress is scheduled to adjourn in advance of the November elections.
