A bill requiring students to learn about the contributions homosexuals have made to society and that would remove sex-specific terms such as "mom" and "dad" from textbooks has passed another hurdle on the way to becoming the law of the land in California.

Having already been approved by the state's Senate Judiciary Committee, SB 1437, which would mandate grades 1-12 buy books "accurately" portraying "the sexual diversity of our society," got the nod yesterday of the Senate Education Committee.

The bill also requires students hear history lessons on "the contributions of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States of America."

"This bill is the most extreme effort thus far to transform our public schools into institutions of indoctrination that disregard all notions of the traditional family unit," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute. "SB 1437 seeks to eliminate all 'stereotypes' of the traditional family so that young children are brainwashed into believing that families with moms and dads are irrelevant."

SB 1437 not only affects textbooks and instructional materials for kindergarten and grades 1-12, it also affects all school-sponsored activities.

"School-sponsored activities include everything from cheerleading and sports activities to the prom," said England. "Under SB 1437 school districts would likely be prohibited from having a 'prom king and queen' because that would show bias based on gender and sexual orientation."

England also says the bill would likely do away with dress codes and would force the accommodation of transsexuals on girl-specific or boy-specific sports teams.

England says the measure amounts to unneeded social experimentation.

"SB 1437 disregards the religious and moral convictions of parents and students and will result in reverse discrimination," she said.

Sponsored by Democratic Sen. Sheila Kuehl – a lesbian actress best known for playing Zelda in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" in the 1960s – the legislation would add "gender" (actual or perceived) and "sexual orientation" to the law that prohibits California public schools from having textbooks, teaching materials, instruction or "school-sponsored activities" that reflect adversely upon people based on characteristics like race, creed and handicap.

Sen. Sheila Kuehl

"We've been working since 1995 to try to improve the climate in schools for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender kids, as well as those kids who are just thought to be gay, because there is an enormous amount of harassment and discrimination at stake," Kuehl explained. "Teaching materials mostly contain negative or adverse views of us, and that's when they mention us at all."

"In textbooks, it's as if there's no gay people in California at all, so forget about it," she added.

Good lord, Kaliforina is becoming more and more freakish everyday.

So... what is the point of this? She feeling left out or something?

This makes no sense whatsoever. It doesn't even improve anything for GLBT students, it's just more BS designed to force people to bow down to the minority. It's not like there's anything offensive to them in textbooks or schools, so why are they trying to change it?

I have nothing against the normal homosexual person, but people like this piss me off.

mod edit: that went a bit too far

[edit] Sorry folks, it's a common term where I'm from. [/edit]

ahem* Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce the biggest peice of :cens: bill ever. Passed by the dumbest peice of :cens: governor ever. I just wanna know before I hang myself, what contributions, REAL CONTRIBUTIONS, have gays/lesbians/bisexuals made to society?

Those text books won't find their way to Tennessee anytime soon. This just adds to my thinking that I will never live in Cali...ever.

Down with all textbooks!

Textbooks...blah. My big beef comes with history textbooks. The authors of such junk write them as if history was all happy and politically correct when history is anything but those 2 things.

If mom and dad are banished, did George Washington ever tell his father he cut down the cherry tree?

what the!!!!!!!!!! transsexuals on sports teams. Reminds me of when the Soviets found male athletes without the y chromosome. At the time the olympics determined gender via blood tests because a physical check (drop your pants) was too intrusive.

Haahahahaha.... man, what a crock of poop! This is why I love America... I just fell of my chair laughing and the realisation that there is somebody who really believes that this is the right thing to do, makes me laugh even harder. Gentlmen, we live in an extraordinary world..... that's all I have to say!

I just read SB 1437 and no where did I see where "Mom" and "Dad" will no longer be allowed, in fact, it doesn't say that at all.

It says nothing specifically about not allowing prom king and queens, or ending male/female sports.

I think it suffers from a bit too much PCism, but nowhere does is specifically state what the article implies. People seem to be jumping to the worst case scenario.

For places like CA, legislation concerning homosexuals and transsexuals does need to exist. They are in the schools and taking active roles within school activities, I do not believe they should have to be excluded because of a sexual preference, and in the case of transsexuals a mental (and sometimes medical) disorder.

I do believe this particular bill is a bit much, and leaves room for too many things to happen. It seems to me the radicals (ultra far left) have the power in CA and have decided that instead of attempting to help the homosexual and transgender communities fit in with society and work at being accepted, they believe it is their job to make society fit them. Unfortunately, CA has allowed this to happen. Alienate the majority to soothe the minority.

What praytell will they replace mom and dad with "parental unit"? No matter how hard people try to ignore it, until we go into full scale cloning EVERYONE has a mom and dad, except for the Brits and Aussies as they have a "mum". This is ignoring the laws of biology in the name of PC... not good and doomed to fail.

Now, Cadet Henderson, there are many people who are not heterosexual and have contributed greatly to this country. Some soldiers and at least one officer I served with were gay and great soldiers. Some are out and some aren't as their personal choices dictate. Hell there are even gay NFL players. The following link is a list which might hold one or two surprises for some people.

That said this law sounds more like someone's stab for the limelight than a well-thought out means of honouring the contributions of gay Americans.

Well, that's just it, they aren't trying to remove "Mom" and "Dad." That's just someone elses spin on the bill.

While I have no doubt that bill is another attempt to create non-gender, pointless generic titles I would like to point out that that the following were considered gay/bisexual:

Leonardo da Vinci - 15th century Italian artist, scientist, and engineer, researcher of human anatomy, mathematics, and the potential for human flight.

Alan Turing - 20th century British mathematician, credited with creating the theoretical framework and design for the earliest modern computer. His conceptual design was dubbed the "Turing machine". He also invented the Enigma machine, which deciphered the secret German military code, contributing enormously to the Allied victory in World War II.

Jim Pollack - 20th century American astrophysicist, senior space research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. Pollack was a world-renowned expert in the study of planetary atmospheres and particulates whose work led to many advances in our understanding of the solar system.

Alexander von Humboldt - 19th century Prussian naturalist, explorer of Central and South America, author of a 23-volume work on his travels, and of the seminal Cosmos, which laid the foundations for modern physical geography and meteorology.

Sir Francis Bacon - 17th century English philosopher of science, author of Novum Organum; called "the high priest of modern science" for elucidating principles of the scientific method.

To name but a few (and I left the military ones out as you did enquire about "society").

I really find it sad that people still exist who can over look another persons contribution to mankinds advancement based on their sexuality, religion or race, I figured that mentality was long dead.

Just a little adition to Montys list there. I think Alexander the Great would fit the bill.

I think Abraham Lincoln is thought to be homosexual by some because he slept with other men in the same bed. However, those who think so fail to realize that a man sleeping in the same bed as another was acceptible in American history. Sometimes the beds of Inns in small villages would be full, at least one man to a bed. It was common practice for the inn keeper to accept more people and put 2 men per a bed. I believe the fact that the next town would be miles away is a reason to sleep 2 men per a bed. In my readings, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all slept in a bed with another man while they were traveling. I know enough about John Adams that if you think he's gay, you have to be smoking some serious drugs. Oh yeah, he is the author of the massachusetts state constitution. Tho Admas wrote that a marriage is between 2 people, I am quite sure he did not intent for that to include Adam and Steve.

I believe this mistake comes from the error of applying our morals to history. Today a man will normally take to the floor, couch or bathtub before sleeping in the same bed as another man.

That is my thought for the day :read:

I see that the section culture/ literature is left out. Many gays/ lesbiens and possible mixes between the two have contributed greatly too. For literature I'll just say Oscar Wilde and for culture Rudolph Nurieff (or however you spell that).
So I'll just go with Monty's
