Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, the contractors whose costs to build competing prototypes for a fast new Navy ship doubled, have separately submitted bids for the next round of production.
General Dynamics submitted its bid yesterday, said Robert Doolittle, spokesman for the Falls Church company. Bethesda-based Lockheed submitted its bid Thursday, company spokeswoman Diana Massing said. The current competition was only open to the two prototype developers.
Current Navy plans call for buying as many as three of the Littoral Combat Ships this fiscal year and next with a budget of $1.93 billion. Ultimately, plans call for buying as many as 55 of the vessels by 2020 for mine clearance, submarine hunting and other missions in near-shore environments called littorals.
