Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Oh yeah... I forgot one.. Pope John Paul II.... JPII was one of the most beloved Popes in recent history and was shunned. But then again... he was conservative.

You are confusing Religon and Politics. Like many in the Vatican, He was religiously conservative but not politically. And while he was popular, that didnt mean that everyone agreed with him. I am sitting in a catholic country of 63 million most of which DISAGREED with alot of what he said, especially on social issues.

JPII hated violence, he did not approve at all of military conflict. Nobels are given to those who promote peace, which is what JPII did thats why he won.

I must agree, as a card carrying Atheist, I had great respect for Pope John Paul II and feel that he left the world a better place. He certainly promoted world peace such as few others ever have in my memory.

Although I like Obama and his efforts at promoting some kind of peace in this world, I think it was a little undeserved. For one thing, it's much too soon, and where's the peace?

This just goes to show how far Charisma can take you.

There's been a lot of "fuzz" in Norwegian media about this as well.
It's certainly a good thing that Obama seems to have an increased focus on world peace, but as many has posted before me, this price should be for doing something, not wanting to do something in the future, and there certainly were quite a few candidates that has been doing a lot of good things for a loooong time now..

And I'm really not looking forward to December 10th since it looks like Obama will come to Oslo to receive the price personally.
I can't imagine the increase in security it will be here then, and the cost related to that... :?

Seems like a lot of people feel President Obama was given the award for "not being Bush", if that is true then maybe it should have been a shared award? Bush and Obama.

Bush for making Obama look so good, that the award would be given.

I'd like to know who's award he got, in my opinion he hasn't been in any position of reliance long enough to deserve that prize yet

The Europeans finally have a Socialist in power that fits their mold. He is trying to move us towards socialist ways, and so far he is failing (Thank GOD!). He is lossing respect in the US, so now the socialist in Europe have to bolster his ego. Look at all his policies, they are bad for you and the other 300 millions Americans, our currency is failing, we have over 18% (true number) unemployment, he can't make a decision on anything without putting it into committee (Afganistan, health, economy, etc, etc, etc. Finally, How's that hope and change working for ya?

Currency was failing before Obama... The Euro has been rising for a LONG time.

Obama's approval ratings have actually been rising as of late, so you're wrong on that point as well.

Please show sources for the 18% unemployment.

As far as committees goes... I'd rather him ask for advice from experts than make an ill-informed decision... Something our last president seemed incapable of doing. Pride is a very powerful thing.

Unemployment current rate is a little above 10% some economists are predicting at least 18% to 20% if it doesn't level off soon. Links would do no good. You would just find an opposing link to prop up the stimulis (like Biden is doing).

You need to face it. The prize is a sham award that says "hey your not Bush" Obama has done nothing to rate it.

Obama's peace prize will seem sensible if this guy gets the economics award. A bit like giving the peace prize to Osama Bin Laden

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – American economist Eugene Fama, considered the father of the efficient market theory, is the favorite to win this year's Nobel economics prize, due to be announced on Monday.

In the simplest terms, the theory holds that markets are the best guide to determining the value of an asset.

After a year of extreme financial turmoil, questions have been raised about how rational market behavior really is. But being in tune with current events has never been a condition for winning the prestigious prize, which often rewards work that took place decades ago

Its not that he's done nothing. For one he has reversed the hostile tone for the more part. Since he took Office he racheted down the escalations with Russia, and hes improved relations with both the Europeans, Arabs, and South Americans. Even the Chinese seem less posturing as of late.

Considering where we were last year on all of these things thats quite an accomplishment. Is this a political reward? Yes, probably. But the fact Obama won "not-Bush" award should speak volumes to any GOP candidate who is seeking office. America paid a very high price for Bush giving the world the finger, this should be a reminder to take heed from the next GOP candidate. But I am sure they will have missed the point as usual.

And whether people see it or not it still remains a good thing for America as a whole.I am not against Obama getting the Nobel, but I do think it was premature. I find it interesting that the two groups that are absolutely opposed to Obama getting the Nobel happened to be the Taliban and the Republican Party.
